I was doing the math—as an adult I’ve been away from Canada on Canada Day more than I’ve been home over the past 15-years. I’ve celebrated in Mexico and Panama, in the US and now Tahiti.
When I was a kid we used to meet a lot of Canadians who spent a good deal of their lives in other countries (I think we must be an especially nomadic nation…). I wondered how they still managed to define themselves as Canadians when they weren’t really part of the country on a regular basis. But now as a nomadic family ourselves I realize being Canadian defines me even when I’m not home.
And so today on Canada’s 144th birthday, I want to say happy birthday to my country—for better or worse I’m proud of my homeland (though not so keen on our Prime Minister…). Someday I’ll be home to celebrate again—but for now a big flag hoisted over clear lagoon waters will have to do.
Happy Canada Day!!
